Journal Reflections with connections to “belonging” and “community”
What are you learning regarding your evidence? What have you noticed through your scanning and observation? What is going on for your learners?
The children have a very good understanding about what makes them have a sense of belonging and community. For many, it is about being included during recess and lunch and having friends or one close friend.
How is what you are learning now different from when you began in the fall?
In the fall, we were learning about inclusion and what we need as individuals within a group to create a safe learning community. We extended to valuing and acknowledging positive attributes in others to foster a greater and deeper connection among peers by writing a daily compliment for each person in the class. We are now reflecting on more themes within community such as relationship, love, care and safety for the school and beyond with animals, the environment, our school, our families, our grandpals and others (near and far) that we don’t know, ie. walk for water.
What questions do you have moving forward?
In addition to reflections and observations, what other ways might I collect evidence of an embodied understanding.
What are some next steps you are considering?
To foster relationships and encourage solving problems in peaceful ways, we are going to be doing an activity on “saying sorry” vs. “acknowledging error” and accepting with “it’s okay” vs. “thank you for apologizing.” I would also like to explore this with forgiveness, acceptance, boundaries and restoration posters.
