Reflection Frame for Evidence: Our Story

Division: 2

 We had our class circle with the topic of multicultural identity. Students were asked to describe their multicultural identity using 3 or more words. Students discussed their words in circle, then chose a word they are most proud to identify with and why. Following this, we discussed stereotypes in our culture. Students chose one of their words they feel is stereotyped and how this makes them feel. This led to a rich and meaningful conversation.

What are you learning regarding your evidence? What have you noticed through your scanning and observation?  What is going on for your learners? 

Some students had a difficult time thinking of words they identify with, however once they heard a few examples, it was inspiring to hear them discuss their words and why they are proud to identify with them. Some of the words we discussed as stereotypes, were often words they were most proud to identify with.

This activity gave my students a unique and personal insight into the lives and thoughts of their peers. They were all very respectful and supportive of one another. 

How is what you are learning now different from when you began in the fall? 

This activity helped me get to know my students even more ® their strengths, their insecurities, and how incredibly accepting they are of one another. The conversation about stereotypes was a real “eye opener” for many students. Often they use words to identify each other, without truly knowing how it can make others feel about themselves. After hearing perspective from other students about certain words and how they make them feel, may students were unaware, and said it changes the way they use certain words in conversation.

What are some next steps you are considering?  

- to continue our conversation about stereotypes in our culture and in our classroom.

- continue celebrating  my students’ strength, culture and identity throughout everything we do.
