Div. 3: Immigration in my Family
Reflection Frame for Evidence: Our Story
Name: Mrs. Kwok
Division: 3
To begin our immigration unit, the students were asked to interview a family member to learn about their family’s journey to Canada. Then they had to present what they learned to their class in any way that they liked. In the sample shwon, this student chose to share her mom’s journey by writing it like a story. The kids learned about where they came from (personal and cultural identity) and learned that not only is their community comprised of immigrants, but to feel/show empathy for all newcomers as all our families have faced similar challenges and hopes (social responsibility).
What are you learning regarding your evidence? What have you noticed through your scanning and observation? What is going on for your learners?
I noticed that the kids didn’t know as much about their parents as I thought they would. They actually really enjoyed learning about their parents’ personal lives. So I think the kids know themselves quite well (or can describe themselves) but they often don’t realize that where their families have been and what they’ve gone through is a part of who they are too. And it’s also interesting to help them make the connection that who they are can change – just like how their parents moved and changed their own situations.
How is what you are learning now different from when you began in the fall?
With this school goal, I can now plan/include activities and/or have conversations related to ideitty with more purpose and meaning.
What questions do you have moving forward?
Once kids have a good sense of who they are and understand that we are all our own unique individuals, I will need to help them see their role/part in communities. I need to start planning that (how will I do that?)
