Scanning Interview Documentation November 2020

Our staff was asked to reflect on their Student Interviews where they scanned their students with four questions on Learning and four quesitons on Wellness.

 

Afer sharing in their reflections in a small group, they shared out key points witht he entire staff.  THey were asked to  relfect on the following prompts.

  • What did you learn about your students by deeply listening?
  • What questions did it leave you with?

Group 1 - we noticed:

  • naming two adults came very quickly
  • happiness came up around friends a lot
  • I have realized how important friend time - free time is
  • Time to engage with other people is so important
  • COVID has caused fear and I have really structured things - but how does this support friendships
  • Maybe I can let go of some of the anxiety I have as a teacher about COVID, - Maybe they will feel less anxiety too
  • I think I need to create more opportunities to for learners to establish more friendships  

Group 2 - we noticed:

  • they could name lots of teachers they connect with
  • Social connections were a big priority
  • we hope our EAs can be provided time to do interviews too - their perspecitive is vital
  • How might we support those who do not have someone to connect to?
  • Why?  We want to investigate further.
  • How might we involve all?
  • The TL learners do not know who all the people are yet that they can connect with.
  • What could we do to help the TL learners get to know the staff better?

Group 3 - we noticed:

  • they could name classroom teachers - but not others.
  • How they are doing in their learning - this was hard for them to name and speak about.
  • Many focus on the what the teacher says as their success point.
  • Can our learners identify their own strengths and next steps - not just waiting for teacher feed back?
  • My learners were able to connect deeply of self assessment - is this because of being in the CSL model I believe.
  • Every group is different.  Not all the same

Group 4 - we noticed:

  • smaller group of learners in class (B/C of TL learners at home)
  • They are connecting to my core group (cohort)
  • "I feel loved"….is what I heard.  
  • The smaller groups in cohorts enables connection we believe
  • Craig - his TL group was struggling to name adults
  • Students are feeling nervous about being at school  - COVID.
  • Am I safe?
  • In school connection is so important
  • At home learners and in school learners - how so we build the community?
  • Maybe - our daily check in focus on the work.  Can we focus more on how they are doing (wellbeing).

Group 5 - We noticed:

  • all adults interview - not just teachers.  How could we include office staff, custodians, EAs,
  • A shared document - maybe if we had the responces on a google doc for all tema members to access would help share the responses.
  • One on one interviews for all
  • I might need to revise growth mindset - it helped me know my next steps… I noticed that many were very hard on themselves.
  • many Learners had strategies for wellbeing
  • Empathy felt as the learners cared for others in the community.  And worry…
  • Notice and name….Reading…how will you get there? - Read? 
  • TL learners….I wish I included them to add the answers.
