Self Awareness: Developing Competencies and Strategies

During the months of September and October the teachers have been focussing on building community and developing friendships in the classroom. They have also been focussing on increasing the students' self awareness and how they are feeling during the school day. Some teachers have introduced their classes to using Mood Meters during the day to help the children to recognize and use strategies to move from one mood to another during the day. They have also been reading books such as Ishi by Akiko Yabuki and We Are Welcome by Alexandra Penfold. These books focus on Inclusion and Acceptance and give examples of how to care for oneself, others and place.
