Student Voice and Community Bench Initiative

After gathering data about how we could build inclusivity and a sense of belonging at Blair, the students collaborated to design a Community Bench for everyone to access and use.

Students and teachers contributed to the creative design process after the Leadership team shared three design options with all students in the school. After voting, students overwhelmingly decided to use a peace sign as the anchor.

The process of activating student voices required staff to recognize the importance of elevating student voice. Students can be a great resource for creative ideas and facilitators of change within a school community.

When student voice is encouraged, students who typically do not always have agency, or may not be the dominant voice, can experience growth, representation, and demonstrate their individuality.

The more students were encouraged to express their opinions and voice, the more confidence they gained in their ability to lead, share.
